Surprisingly good food and helpful staff. Very friendly workers who enjoy their work!
Took my wife out for the T-Bone Thursday.
got a large T-Bone with chips and salad, accompanied by makhulu beans and pepper sauce. all served on a skillet on wooden block.
Fantastic value at £12, good portion, well cooked, well presented
It’s going to be on my regular list from now on
Had a fabulous meal, in a pleasant environment with excellent, friendly service. Downside was a sticky table which had obviously been wiped but not cleaned. Would definitely return.
Great Burger! Flame grilled.
Went for tonights special, ribs & wings, for my son who is visiting us. Menu is excellent, smells and atmosphere wonderful. Lovely friendly staff, no problems , fast efficient service, and the food was fantastic as always.
I go there regularly at least once a month and have never had a problem with either the food or the service.
Hate to point it out but after a gin and tonic you can’t even tatse the food. ask any decent chef, besides which the only thing you should drink with a braai is beer, man.
Don’t spoil a real south african experience because its not plastic wrapped like all the other european restuarants.
Its unique, its an experience, chill out and enjoy.
me and my husband went for our anniversary and were really let down it took an hour inbetween courses and the food came out cold
Excellent food, great service. You need to try the exotic foods like springbok or ostrich. I can not stress how good these steaks are, make beef seem tasteless!! staff are very helpful and quick, i know it took a while for this place to get on its feet (i went the 1st week this was open and the reviews at that time were quite bad but i can assure you that now it has found its feet the food is fantastic and 100% worth going to)
The one thing that really puts me off this place is those daft characters!!! for people that haven’t been before, this place is trying to be kid friendly and has 3 characters that come in every so often. A member of staff dresses up as a lion, monkey or zebra and comes round the tables for photos for their facebook page. This seems to happen every 45mins or so as it came round twice within a meal sitting the last time I was there.
Now I have no problem with a place trying to get kids excited about coming to their establishment but they need to pick their audience, when a couple is sitting down to eat their meal the last thing they want is to be interrupted by a guy dressed as a monkey tapping you on the shoulder like you are a 5year old!! I have left many comment cards about this. My recommendation would be that they stick to tables with kids on them or at the very least don’t go to a table while they are eating – just plain rude.
The food is that good that the characters don’t put me off – I still go…often
we had a brilliant time. We were so looked after and i had my birhtday there and got lovely icecream and a £10 voucher.
Thank you to all staff for making us have a wonderfuly afternoon, with mum and dad in late 70s and 80 years of age. go go the castle beers too. thank you. going to bring the hubby next time.
My husband and I decided to try somewhere different for lunch so opted for Makhulu 5. We ordered from the early bird menu (2 courses for £9.95) I had the calamari and chicken basket and my husband had the 1/4 rack of ribs and the beef burger. Neither of us could find fault with the food, it tasted great, the portion sizes were good and it was great value for the money.
The service was great, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The decor and cleanliness was excellent. We will definitely be returning.
We went here a few Friday nights ok and it was not our first choice as I had read mixed reviews but Makhulu have reacted positively to the feedback as the service was superb, the food was perfect and the atmosphere very friendly and welcoming. The first thing we were asked was had we been here before so this quickly tells the server how much attention their customers need. Very important! Steaks were good and the menu had plenty of different things on it. I would like to see the staff explain more about the different south african food on the menu and maybe even have a few free appetisers when you come in like biltong etc
All in all a great service and night however I did find out afterwards that they actually have a room in the restaurant that lets you experience the actual heat and humidity of Africa? No one told us that!
Great sunday evening . Zebra brilliant !. Young Cameron loved him. Staff extremely friendly and helpfull. Will recommend it to friends. Thankyou
I went with 10 family members for a child’s birthday meal. I have seen poor reviews for this restaurant and I say that they are totally unfair (or the restaurant have listened and recitifed). The staff went beyond anything I would have expected in terms of service. From the moment we arrived they were attentive without being overpowering, unrushed, great with the kids, dressed up as a zebra to present the birthday cake and even presented the child with a voucher for a return visit. The food was excellent, tasty, hot, authentic (I have been to Mombasa!), and value for money. It may have been because it was a Monday and quiet, but based on our experience last night, I would thoroughly recommend it, especially to families and I am looking forward to returning very soon.
Just one thing…this is such a gem, why is it so unknown amongst the locals?
Myself, and 11 friends went here on Saturday for a pre-stag do meal. We booked a table at about 2PM for 5:30, arrived in groups of 4 over the course of about 10 or 15 minutes with absolutely no hassle whatsoever.
The waiter was extremely polite, attentive and prompt. We were each given our menus as well as their “experimental” menu, which they said given enough good reviews would be added to their main menu. Everything sounded good, even the Calamari (squid) and shark fillet.
The prices ranged from £5.95 for peri-peri chicken, to just under £24 for an 8oz ostrich fillet (I think). The atmosphere was great, music wasn’t too loud, decor, cleanliness etc. were all fine.
I especially loved the authentic Zulu spears and shields hanging on the wall, as well as the open kitchen. Every so often you’d get a different, pleasant smell as well, from the wood-fire BBQ to grilled seafood, to steak. Just made me even hungrier while I waited.
And just was we were leaving, a guy in a zebra costume came out to pose with the kids and families, with a waitress taking pictures to upload onto their Facebook page. Not my kinda thing, but it’s good to see they make an effort for most/all age ranges.
5*, I’ll definitely be returning the next time I’m in Bangor.
Went for a family meal to Makhulu 5. The fire was brilliant and there was a good atmosphere about the place. The restaurant seemed pretty clean and the menu had a good choice of meals. Although there needs to be some more meals to choose from, it is a new restaurant and is still improving. The waiters were friendly, the service was pretty quick (although there weren’t many people there at the time) and the food tasted good, especially the rib rack. Overall, I would recommend it and it isn’t overly expensive (We had an early bird menu which was £9.95 for 2 courses per person).
Liked the food, service ok, if I had kids I would definately bring them here.
Poor poor service!!
Menu really over priced for the quality of the food!
I had a bad time here before but thought I would give it another ago as every where can have bad days but two in a row!! It’s just bad service bad food!
All you can eat ribs on a Sunday sounds good but when you have to sit and wait for each half rack fir 10 min it just becomes a joke!
WILL NEVER BE BACK!!
Advice to anyone thinking of eating here AVOID!!
Went into this place for breakfast, my son and I were the only customers. Ordered Ulster fries, absolutely rank. There is no words to explain how bad it was. We had waited half hour for it to be cooked, burnt on one side, raw on other. Dont know what was meant to be scrambled egg on my plate, was grey in colour. I decide to return whole meal untouched, it looked disgusting. Manager said she had tasted it in kitchen and i did have a couple of valid points, however thought I was a bit over the top because I sais it was disgusting. Have been here once before for tea n it was ok. My family eat out every week, this is the worse I have ever seen, could not believe that anyone could serve this. NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN.
I went to this restaurant twice. The week it opened and a bout a month later.
Both times were awful!! The services was the worst we have ever received… The first time we booked table for a friends birthday, we were looked at like we had four heads when we arrived because a couple of guests were not going to make it. We waited 45 minutes before getting a menu, which we had to ask for. They didn’t have enough menus, when customers arrived after us and were given menus we complained, these were then taken from these customers to give to us, we waited a further 1hour 15 minutes for our food, which was very poor, steaks ordered medium, were well over done! and Not receiving our sides.
We give them the benefit of the doubt that this was because it was just new, my partner and I took our son along one afternoon because it was quiet, but this time the service was worse.
We waited 45 minutes for our food, there was only 1 other table with customers and they were already eating.
I asked for gravy mash and got chips, my partner got a salad but didn’t get any sauce, I asked for my steak to still be pink inside but again got a well over done steak..
Trying to get waiters attention was a complete nightmare!! It was as if they were avoiding eye contact.
What we felt was really unacceptable was waiters gathering round a table at the back chatting and laughing very loudly, this made us feel that we shouldn’t of being there!
Not being asked if everything is OK or if you would like an other drink or when they see you haven’t touched the food asking if there was a problem with your order. This is not asking for too much in a restaurant when you are paying them good money to have an acceptable standard of service.
1st thoughts on entry were wow looks great, things soon went downhill, drinks ordered gin and tonic - no tonic gin and cranberry - no cranberry. Waiter said sorry busy Friday night. Settled for another drink. Food order starter ordered fish cakes, no fish cakes, so ordered king prawns, ordered chicken burger on ciabatta, sorry no ciabatta. King prawns arrived but actually langoustines and they were still frozen, not good unless you fancy a week in hospital.fortunately we realised and sent them
back. Chicken burger came and would have had a better one in mc donalds next door, it was a breast that had been sliced in half and flatened to looked bigger and luke warm chips. Two bits of raw onion, one slice of tomato and an ice burg lettuce leaf. Oh and a mini splash of sauce. When we asked for hot chips we were told the owner says the chips are straight out of the fryer. I’m no chef but know the difference between a hot and cold chip!the waiter worked hard to appease the situation but the owner did not come over to apologise even after the issues were pointed out, he just looked over and gave the impression he wasn’t bothered. Absolutely awful won’t be going back!
Another visit. Another great meal. Got the ribs then malva pudding for dessert. Friendly staff, prompt service.
Friendly and attentive staff, give you good time to read the menu and are very helpful and are still quick enough that you arent waiting and looking around for them.
Great decor in the restaurant and the atmosphere is better than anywhere ive been before, the mascots are a great idea for the children and they always give u a giggle!
The food is absolutely brilliant, ive enjoyed everything and ive been about 8 times now ordering different things each time! I had a burger and it was by far the best ive ever had, would also recommend ostrich, the ribs (best ever), the zulu wings, seafood chowder and of course the steaks. The desserts are also great and i look forward to the new menu coming out!
Took some south african friends and family there for a treat. They have raved about it ever since, Just like home. One of them is bringing his mum and aunty when they arrive over for a holiday next month.
A truly outstanding experience. Relaxed atmosphere excellent service and great south african food. According to jacobus the Malva pudding is just like home.
Staff couldnt have been friendlier , and the food terrific, (AS ALWAYS)
Great job people and lets keep it just the way it is.
bad bad establishment.
poor quality and presentation of food.
tacky fancy dress animals.
atmosphere ruined and cheapened by loud music and tv’s
this place needs to go back to basics - good food, good service and good atmosphere is what is needed (it needs to be classier)
don’t waste your money here there are much better places to eat in Bangor!
Visited Makhulu on Saturday night with another couple, we were impressed as we had heard very little from anyone as to its ratings. The staff were very attentive and polite, although still learning the menu, but their service was good. The restaurants was very busy with lots of families and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The staff kept the tables clean and were quick to clear after the meal. We loved the Zulu fire and the fact that the cooks were on display and had head covering (not like so many celebrity chefs). Our food order had one error on the starter which was corrected quickly and the mains of four steaks cooked to different tastes were just as ordered. We only had two complaints, we were seated below speakers and the music becomes quite loud and annoying after a time. There were 5 birthdays that evening during our meal when the music was switched off, lights dimmed and the ‘animal’ delivered the cake, complete with firework and singing to the birthday person. This was lovely the first couple of times when it was for a child, but the following times were for adults and the novelty had worn off for us. I would recommend the restaurant for a change and feel its great for families.
cold food slow service, could be a good night out but really need to sort things out first, and large animals walking around is not the way to do it. wont be back until standards go way up!
one plus is the place is clean and tidy good job on that
My daughter and I were hoping to enjoy a lovely little girlie night out for dinner and chose here on a whim. We were promptly shown to a booth by a friendly waiter who proceeded to ask if we had been to the restaurant before. Since it was our first visit he explained the concept, took our drinks order and left us with the menus. He eventually returned to take our food order, my daughter ordered a steak and I ordered the vegetarian bean burger which came with goats cheese and red onion. Our drinks eventually arrived and the food arrived after a reasonable passing of time. My daughter tucked into hers declaring the mushroom sauce to be lovely and I proceeded to sample mine. After the first mouthful I became curious as to the lack of goats cheese flavour and no sign of a bean burger. I had a hoke round under the mountain of rough cut lettuce and three huge rings of raw white onion in the hope I would find it but was disappointed to discover I had in fact been given a flat mushroom topped with fried red pepper and mozzarella cheese! I pondered a while if I had in fact missed a second veggie burger option and when our waiter returned and asked if everything was okay I explained that it wasn’t and asked if I may have another look at the menu as my burger didn’t seem to be the one I ordered. He seemed surprised and pointed out that I had ordered a vegetarian burger and that was indeed what I had been served. I pointed out that while it was indeed a vegetarian burger it was NOT the one listed on their menu. He said he would be back in a moment and scampered off. I waited for ages and watched while he served other tables, cleared other tables and took payment from other tables and then as if by magic a small, rather menacing, expressionless man appeared at the end of my table, complete with clip board and head set. He ask if I had a problem and I explained. He informed me that the bean burger had been removed from the menu because the chef wasn’t happy with how they were turning out and had replaced it with the dish I had been served. I explained that while I was enjoying the food it was not what I had ordered or had been looking forward to eating. I also pointed out that I didn’t think it was worth the same money as the one on the menu, he mumbled that he would sort something out and left.
Our waiter returned eventually and apologised for the mix up and then started to tell me that the menu was changing the following week and he hadn’t realised the meal I had ordered had been changed. I told him that the manager had already told me the chef had removed it from the menu and suggested that perhaps the staff should be informed of these changes before they take customer orders. We were offered a sweet menu but after seeing a few dessert plates going past I really didn’t think they were worth £5 each. I asked for the bill which took ages to arrive, the waiter returned again and apologised for the wait but apparently the manager had to do it as he was discounting the bill, he almost begged us to not let this experience put us off returning, ‘please please please come back some time’. I actually thought the discount would be worth waiting for, the bill came to approximately £23.80 and he knocked £3.40 off leaving a balance of £20.40! Go figure!
The TV above my head was awful and really ruined what should be a social time.
Staff friendly and helpful… the waiter was but almost too much so… Environment… African style surroundings pity about the awful ‘wanna be’ African music. Timon & Pumba singing Hakuna Matata and Paul Simon I would not really class as the traditional sound of Africa.
Would I return… probably not. Was it value for money… no. Is my review rude and immature… no it’s just the plain simple truth!
Best part of the night… McDonald’s drive thru and our McFlurrys.
i recently went to Makulu 5 for dinner with my family and the whole experience was pretty dire. from them not being able to provide half the dishes on the menu to the cold and smoky environment you are served in, staff were nice and service was ok despite the food being cold and really not of a high standard. as a South African i was very keen to try the restaurant out and was bitterly disappointed, friends told me of the first South African restaurant to open in Bangor called Phezulu and this was much more to my taste and in a better location, although the food was quite slow to come out it was well worth the wait and the service here was excellent. a great restaurant in a prime location, try it out. Its Phezulu, Main Street Bangor.
Went with my teenagers and really enjoyed it. The food was excellent with a good choice for all, my son NEEDS to go again because he couldnt decide between 2 meals. The staff were very attentive but not too much. Will definately be returning.
Really loved it here. Food was delicious, staff were friendly and the decor was superb.
The south african steamed pudding dessert with ice cream is worth going back for alone.
I visited Makhulu with my wife and 2 teenage nephews for lunch on Sunday, 16/01. Having spent some 17 years living in SA I was very curious about the restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised that it managed to recreate an atmosphere I hadn’t experienced since my last visit to SA. The surroundings were very relaxing, the food good with ample helpings for the teenagers, who also enjoyed the food more than I had expected. The service was excellent, with just enough attention without being “crowded”. On the debit side was the SA radio station playing pop music loudly (we were very close to the speakers) and it would have been better to hear real African music or even recordings of the African bush. Also, it was disappointing that several of the main courses weren’t available - springbok, ostrich, surf ‘n turf. However, the food we had was very enjoyable, especially the burgers and the spare ribs. Don’t be misled by the adverse reviews for Makhulu. It’s well worth trying and I will certainly be trying it again in the near future.
From the moment we entered we were met by a very friendly and welcoming waiter who served us for our entire meal. He explained the whole concept of the restaurant, the cooking process (the s.african b.b.q) and dishes. My husband and I were there with our 2 children 11 & 9 and they were served with exactly the same attention and dedication as we were. My son who was fascinated by the shark steak was offered a taster - this was cooked specially and brought down to our table( huge portion by the way for just a sample) However the fun really started when the zebra, gorilla and lion entered the restaurant….....what a hit!! the children compared it to being on holiday and is now definately their favourite restaurant EVER!!! Honestly just go and enjoy something different in Bangor with great food,, spotless facilities, excellent service and fabulous atmosphere. Cant finish this without mentioning said waiter,... Thank You Aarron.!!
was there tonight for the 5th time. Cannot understand the complaints. Service excellent Staff friendly, helpful. Place spotless as usual. Tried the special menu rather than main menu.
The Zulu fire wings were great, that sauce is lethal. Good portion of wings. my wife had the Mushrooms they were excellent, again a good portion. main course was the ham hock with apple sauce and mash. What can I say, I had sunday lunch for three in front of me. Meat fell of the bone, crispy on outside sweet and juicy in the centre, just as it should be. Mash and gravy again excellent. all food hot and well presented. My wife tried the Burger and chips, again excellent , large portion Price £9.95 per person. unbeatable value. only minor complaint staff slightly overattentive, but they are trying their best. restuarant wasn not particularly warm but not cold, probably due to the fact that it was -1C outside.
Recommend it… I have been doing nothing else for months.
To all the staff and owners - ignore the idiots, listen to the comments of those of us who eat out regularly and review restuarants properly. Keep it up you are doing great.
Went to sample the brunch menu - very friendly service, albeit a bit on the slow side (wasn’t particularly busy, either), very friendly staff who went out of their way to keep our 2-year-old amused (including a visit by Zibi the Zebra!) - and to top it off, the food was good too, with the brunch portions being surprisingly good for the price. Will be heading back to try the evening menu when we get the chance.
I have been to Makhulu5 before and had a great experience. this prompted me to go back as I thought it could only get better now that they had found their feet. I’m sorry to say this was not the case. All of the waiting staff have changed. The new staff are not as knowledgeable about the menu/bar menu and I was told a complete lie by my waitress with regards to the Springbok….. just so she could go and clear another table as there was a waiter pushing her to do so. I believe he must be a new manager but seems very pushy to me. The staff just don’t seem to care as much and clearly have no rapport with each other.
The food just wasn’t as good as before. The springbok was over cooked and my mash was stone cold. We just felt the food was average for the price and the tense atmosphere of the staff didn’t help.
The cutlery wasn’t polished, tables had napkins that looked like they’d been used and there was food on the floor! The addition of the tv completely kills the atmosphere.
I hope this is does not remain the case of Mak5 as I was singing its praises a few months ago but now I don’t know if i’ll be back. we didnt even feel like complaining to our waitress as we ended up feeling sorry for her and just wanted to leave.
Please Makhulu sort it out!!
Was thinking of going this Sunday, I dont know, it seems to have good days and bad, oh what to do, i think i’ll maybe go in and ask if i can use the toilet, they seem to be the best thing about the whole thing, pity i hope it picks up because Bangor could do with a good restaurant other than papa joes which i do not like because everthing is too rich, might be china china then yum!
2nd time at makhulu 5 3rd oct .... all change with staff…whats going on… food soso service very soso ... very cold we had to keep our coats on ... 45 minutes for a rear steak and burger whats going on here .... desserts well we had to ask for menu not offored ... coffee an other 15 minutes ... well wont to back and office will be going some where else ....
Went to this restaurant when it first opened as I like to give support to any new business. Went with my husband and son for lunch. It was empty. Besides the expensive lunch menu, the smell of the oven was unbearable. I had my contact lenses in and my eyes were watering and burning. I wanted to leave after ordering drinks but my husband felt we should stay and give it a go.
They wanted £5 to feed a 2 year old, which I promptly declined.
We both ordered burgers and chips at £9.99 which is very overpriced especially for lunch time. You can get a great lunch at Papa Joes on Hamilton Road for around £6.00.
Won’t be back unless I hear they have sorted out the ventilation. All of our clothes had to be washed as soon as we got home as it was as if we had bathed in bbq water. Gross.
I noticed they have now put some early bird offers and brunch menu on which is just as well as I would assume it would be better to reduce the lunch time menu price and fill the place, than charge ridiculous prices for a burger and have the place empty.
I am a personal Chef to a Marchioness and have cooked for Royalty and all I can say is the food at Makhulu 5 is fit for a King .I have worked my way threw the menu and now am starting with the lunch menu . I have been back 18 times since they opened and to day had lunch and supper there .Makhulu 5 means big five . From me they get my big five .
5 star! Food
5 star! Quality service
5 star! Pricing
5 star! Décor
5 star! Atmosphere .
Good luck and thanks to all for keeping me well fed .
First time in a South African diner so I was a bit open minded with the food.
Having read through the comments above it would be easy to conceive this place as a restaurant that takes you hours to get seated, when you do get seated, Its by a working girl, you have to constantly ask for certain items, the food is either served cold or that raw it is still jumping across the savanna and cutlrey you wouldn’t feed your dog with.
My recent visit proved to be the complete opposite of negative comments posted prior to mine.
For all those ‘critics’ and negative people who ventured into this exceptional restaurant whilst in it’s teething stage, I dare you to try this again now it’s moved from a walk to a run.
Service was very good and Dale proved a good knowledge of products even though some not listed on the menu. (SA Beer)
Food was exceptional - spicy chicken wings are making me salivate still - Springbok -mmmmm- have it medium rare
One of the managers, Emma Jane did apologise for our mains taking to long although in my opinion there was no issue,
If I was to be picky and find a negative thing it would be that when our beers arrived with the glasses, one of the glasses had a crack in it. - highlighted to Dale and sorted, maybe the barstaff need to pay more attention to detail.
Thank you to the chefs for the mouthwatering food, Dale for your service and most of all Emma Jane for the follow up :-)
Be back soon!!
my partner and i had dinner around 8pm saturday night, we hadn’t booked, the restaurant was moderately busy and we had no problem being seated. the service was quick, efficient and staff very personable…our waiter, johann was pleasant and knowlegable about the menu. i had thought i’d have the ostrich, but due to high demand the previous day it was unavailable. i chose the rump steak, my partner had the springbok….just fabulous. As im not a great fan of cream, i thought the pepper sauce was a little heavy on it, and a bit light on the pepper. the wine could maybe have been chilled a little more. the overall feeling about the restaurant is very good and we plan to take friends there for dinner in the next few weeks, and hope the ostrich is on:) bathrooms clean and uniquely decorated, we hope the standard continues…....would strongly recommend*****
Took the family to Makhulu 5 on Saturday evening. Service was excellent. Kids loved the decor, and bbq area which is fun. The food was very tasty. My partner had the rump steak with pepper sauce and loved it. Overall we had a very enjoyable evening.
Despite hearing some negative reviews about this place I wanted to give it a try myself. Had a nice lunch on Friday, very nice place which I will definitely go back to. A very welcome restaurant to Bangor. I went for the Zulu fire chicken wings and the 8oz ostrich and my mate went for the garlic mushrooms and Spatchcock chicken in peri-peri. For feedback purposes I would have liked my chicken to have had a bit more of a kick however in saying that I got a lot of chicken. The mash I had with my ostrich was a bit on the cool side however I did have gravy which took away some of the coolness. On reflection I should have said to the waiter. My mate observed that the mash was sitting for awhile before getting brought to our table. My ostrich was however excellent. My mate wasnt impressed by his garlic mushrooms due to lack of garlic. His Peri peri whole chicken and chunky chips was excellent. Recommend to give it a go.
Had a lunch on Friday and absolutely enjoyed the meal , the atmosphere and would recommend eating here. The portion size is incredibly huge and it was just a great experience. I have already booked another lunch for work colleagues next month. The staff all very friendly especially Johann. I would like to see a loyalty card process or something similar or maybe giving eg workers in the area an email with a discount voucher to use within the month or even doing a special lunch menu !!
Makhulu 5, 2 kids and 3 adults went for Sunday lunch table booked for 2pm didn’t get out again till 4pm managed main course only in this time, due to extremely slow service infact it was a complete nightmare kids got restless waiting. When food finally arrived it was really nice and staff were lovely, this did not make up for all the waiting around
had lunch at Makhulu 5 today! 5 star! quality service and gorgeous food, will 100% go back. In fact we are thinking of having our xmas lunch there!
outstanding dining experience and great decor
Firstly, I’ve read all of the comments on this site and i really can’t believe some of the things i’ve read. Come on guys, the place has just opened and people are trying to run it into the ground already. Guys look around Bangor or Ards, there is nothing like this place. It is unique, exciting and fresh. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal there. The service was very good, i always felt satisfied, well looked after - a valued customer. The food is top quality and i will recommend anybody to go. I was served by Johann, who went out of his way to give us the best service. A great guy and fun to talk to. guys try it for yourself, make up your own mind.
keep up the good work guys!
Dont usually write reviews but had a wonderful meal at Makhulu 5. Did not book, restaurant was busy but still got a table - not bad for a Saturday night at 8.00 pm. Food was great .. chowder best in NI without a doubt! Staff very friendly - Samantha was a star. Will absolutely go back. Looking forward to it. Did not smell smoke on my cloths as other review suggested. Love the bathrooms. Nice to eventually see something different in Bangor! Give it a try.
Me and my partner were very pleased with everything food was gorgoues and place looks great and smells good with the wood burning staff where very friendly and service was fab could not say a bad word about the place will definitely recommend and will return soon well done guys!!
am south african and love everything south african but this is the 2nd time Makhulu 5 has let me down. I let the first time go because it was a private event before they fully opened but this time was still not impressed.
The decor is lovely , its the staff that i find let the place down alot, we received our meal very quickly but after that no-one came near us, I wanted to ask for some water for the table and a steak knife for my ham hock which due to the size of it was awkward to get to grips with. We were never approached to ask if our meal was ok and the next time we saw the waiter was to clear our plate after he was prompted by the manageress. The food was nice enough and the ham hock went home in a doggie bag and made lovely soup for the next day so not totally a waste.
Hopefully the next time I go the service will be better . Otherwise everything else was fine and if asked I would not put people off from going
Just been there, Service was outstanding, staff were very courteous and friendly. The food was incredible, just like in south africa, I should know, I’ve just come home. The Boerwors and the springbok are excellent and the Malvas pudding is to die for. Recommend it, I don’t need too. its packed every night. By the way as for some of the other comments, the food is well priced and reasonable, remember what you are getting. And if you don’t like south african cooking, well then don’t come, leave room for the majority of us who once having tasted it can’t wait to come back.
Ive never written a review before but felt I had to as I completely disagree with the negative (and actually very rude and immature) comments left about Makhulu 5.
I’ve visited the restaurant twice now and both times the food and service have be exceptional. The first visit my wife and I were served by a very helpful and polite waiter. He was nervous, which is understandable, but really did make our visit enjoyable. We had 1 issue with the food (rump steak slightly over cooked) but this was sorted asap and the bill discounted which more than made up for the small error.
Our second visit was on saturday night (18/09) this time with a party of 6 and it was one of the best nights dinning we’ve ever had. Our waitress (Samantha) was superb!! Nothing was too much trouble and anything we asked for appeared on our table without delay. She was 100% genuine, took time to chat to us and had a lovely manor. The food was exceptional. I thoroughly recommend the springbok or ostrich, it is a SA steakhouse after all.
We had 1 issues when we first visited but this did not put us off coming back…..and we’re glad we did. I hope people give Makhulu 5 a fair chance and understand that weekends will always be busy and mistakes can be made.
This is an excellent new establishment and well worth a visit. We are definitely fans!!!
I thought I would take the opportunity to respond to some of the malicious reviews left here. Firstly, I do not usually get caught up in these type of restaurant reviews, but I cannot help myself on this occasion. Let me put it to you this way, if you are honourable in your views and want to give any business constructive feedback then you need to understand the skills of creating reviews. In other words, let’s outline the basics first. When you have a new restaurant business, any educated punter would know that that business will face teething problems and sometimes - from what we understand - some critical teething problems. I have always believed that the caliber of people that invest the vast sums of money needed into new concepts and, might I add, in this case a very unique concept, has the ability to receive constructive criticism, listen to it and then fix it. Surely the aim of feedback is to facilitate the improvements and growth so that the restaurant can overcome their teething issues.
Secondly, I have always believed that if I am unhappy about any issues in a restaurant that I visit for the first time and they did not meet my expectations then I will give them the feedback on the evening. Furthermore, if the opportunity presents itself, I would request to speak to the manager or owner. To expand on this , let me detail my experience at Makhulu 5 - which, I might add - was also not perfect. I can assure you this, by the time I had left, I understood why.
When we visited the restaurant, they did not have their liquor license yet and straight away, I was on a downer as I could not enjoy a nice glass of wine with the best meat I have ever tried - the Springbok!
For those of you who would like to be educated about the best way to eat meat, please read the small print on the menu as it clearly states below the springbok and the ostrich how they would recommend the meat to be cooked - which was medium rare for springbok and medium for ostrich.
With that said, any well done meat eater gets the leather they deserve. To be fair, about 15 years ago myself and all of my family used to be all well done meat eaters until we started frequenting steakhouses all over the world and were enlightened. I know of many such converters who have seen the light.
So, you do know its a South African safari lodge themed restaurant, don’t you?
There were a few tiny set backs that also intrigued me enough to meet the owner. At first, I was also introduced to the manager (Emma Jane) who informed me that the owner was working in the kitchen and , as it was a wee bit busy, he could not come out to me but invited me to see him in his fire pit. What I thought was going to be a quick few words turned out to be a 15 minute conversation and all I can say is WOW, what I wealth of knowledge did I receive that evening!
For instance, did you know the following facts about this restaurant
1. The timber that they burn in their fire basket is imported from West Africa where the idea is to burn it down inside the fire basket and then they actually cook the food on timber coals like a proper South African braai?
2. Everything used in the restaurant is freshly prepared every day on site - even the desserts get baked in house.
3. From my 15 minutes in their kitchen, I would say that the average age of the chefs is 30 and from my understanding from what I could see, they were all very experienced.
I think you guys are starting to get the gist of my review. Before you go and slate a place instead of giving constructive criticism, first make an effort to get involved in order to understand the whole picture rather than small snippets here and there.
As a business owner myself, I know what it takes to make a name for yourself and also have had personal dealings with the ones that are only out there to be cruel due to their own shortcomings. Some of these reviews are not logical, they are personal. This is a message for the people of Makhulu 5. From my experience in your restaurant, I could tell that my feedback was taken seriously and that there are alot of passionate people behind the scenes. I know you guys will see it through despite the teething problems. There are many people out there like myself that will give you guys the support that you deserve. We will let you guys settle in and will certainly be back shortly.
PS: WE WILL MOST CERTAINLY RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT!!
On arrival everything looked very nice. Ordered a bottle of wine and took forever to arrive, when did arrive had to keep asking for wine glasses and then a wine cooler. Nearly 30 mins after arriving were still waiting on our wine glasses. First impression on service awful.
Staff nice, service very very poor. Theme in restaurant lovely. Decor lovely especially toilets which are really really funky.
Caters for a lot off people and I think this could be the problem. All the Chefs are very young as you can see them cooking eveything under a large grill area which is very smoky and no ventilation. Took far too long for the food to arrive and when are steaks arrived were all rare when we distintley asked for them very well done. Blood was coming out off them by this stage I did not want the Steak anymore what a put off. This is meant to be a Steakhouse and they do not know how to cook steaks. There needs to be a head Chef to keep the kitchen running and in order.
Mashed Potato cold, Pepper Sauce look warm. Starter portion was also very poor 2 Chicken Goujons on a bed off Iceberg lettuce I could have made better at home. Far too pricey for a starter and very little for the price.
We were asked a couple off times was everything okay and we were honest and said no. (Emma Jane) manageress was very nice and took a lot off our bill. We actually felt very sorry for her in the end. To be honest I wouldn’t have paid full price for the meal anyway as none off our party ate the steaks (Springbok) Meat is disguting they would be better with NI Steaks.
I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and will not be returning.
I had a fantastic time in Makhulu 5. Service was great all the staff were friendly and helpful. My girlfriend was delighted with the vegetarian dishes and the kitchen were more than happy to accommodate her. I had the springbok which was cooked to perfection. The waiter who served us was very friendly, always smiling. We had the manager (colleen I think ) over asking us how our meal was and did we have any feedback, which added a lovely personal touch to the whole meal.
The decor and theme of the whole place is fantastic, very different and original with the open fire and animal prints and even a sauna!!!
The toilets were spotless and very different, i had to go in a second time just to have another look. Check them out!!
Obvioulsy as a new restaurant there were a few things needing worked out but as soon as we sat down the waiter explained to us they’d only opened, and it was definately worth the wait for our food.
I can’t wait to return, i’ll be sure to recommend makhulu 5 to everyone.
I have to say it is a rare experience to eat in a place that I am able to leave completely satisfied, but Makhulu 5 ticked all the boxes. Food was phenomenal, staff were fantastic and the general ambience was second to none.
I had springbok for my main and have to agree with the comment left above…. better than steak. My wife also tucked in to the ostrich (one of the leanest meats you can get, so worked well with the calorie count) ;).
A must visit restaurant, I will definitely return in the future to work my way through the menu. 10/10
Ate in Makhulu on Sat 18/9. Strangely they don’t appear to have a phone no, therefore impossible to reserve a table. The restaurant has an open plan grill area which consumed the entire restaurant with smoke. When I returned home my clothes and hair stank of smoke. Restaurant doesn’t appear to have adequate extraction!!
Brought are own wine as ‘BYO’ was advertised outside until early Oct and then when we got there the waitress informed us that it was now Licensed and we would be charged £5 corkage for our 1 bottle of wine. Waited approx 40mins before we got a wine glass to drink our wine, which was left on the table without a chiller. After asking staff 4 times for wine glasses we finally got very hot ones - must have been straight from the dishwisher!! Very poor service!!!
3 of our party had starters and they were just ok. Dirty starter cutlery was left on the table and no clean cutlery was brought for the main without asking for it!! When mains eventually arrived they were all sent back as they were cold and very very undercooked!! When we eventually got our mains back we were then left with cold sauces and again had to ask for hot ones, which took forever. We were in the restaurant for almost 3 hrs and we just had a starter and a main, by the time the main was cooked right we had all lost are appetites.
Nice decor, lovely toilets, nice music, nice manager (felt so sorry for her as everything was going wrong!!!) but would never return. Possible the worst dining experience I have ever encountered!!!
Great place , its just opened so we expected a few hicups. took a while to take our drinks order and food order, but it made up for it when it came.
manageress was great and sorted everything out (emma jane) our main came before our starter , but she sorted this out by taking it off the bill even though we didn’t want this , she insisted.
great experience and hope this venture see’s it through the rough times ahead.
might need to aim more for the family budget to compete with the local kids favourite, but the theme is great.
My husband and I are just in from our first visit to this restaurant. Staff were all very helpful, especially our waitress Jessica and the manageress. Decor was lovely, place was clean and atmosphere was great. We will be back again and look forward to a night there with friends.
Good luck to all management and staff in your new business venture.
the food is outstanding the starters are beautiful my partner had the potato salad and corn and said it was delious and i had the mushrooms and they were yummy aswel ! we each had a rib eye and they were beautifully cooked 10/10 guys keep up the good work
I have to agree with the first comments. Staff are great and place looks fantastic but portions are very small and expensive. My rib-eye stake was fatty too and I had to pay extra for pepper sauce. You only get about 15 chips in a little bowl (and thety cost extra obviously) I also suggest you ask for it done one step below what you usually get as my med-rare was medium with no pink! My wife went for the ham-hock and could’t eat it after she cut into it and a pure blood clot near hit her in the face. £45 for a couple of mains and a couple of cokes!!
Also the front of house girl needs to cover up a bit, I felt like I was been shown to my seat by (a working girl).
Apparently the guy that owns the place has never owned a restaurant before and wants feedback.
My feedback is larger portions of side orders, find a better butcher, cover that reception girl up and perhaps have the waters cover their tatoos.
Food 4/10 Saff 7/10 Price 3/10 Decor 10/10
Try 52 on High Street for comparison, same money.
I thing the owner of Makhulu 5 should turn it into a theam bar instead.
All said, it has potential but we will wait a few months before returning to see if he has his act together foodwise!!
Spoke to a couple others who think the same..
Obviously a lot of time and money spent, place looks fantastic and the staff we met were helpful (although I didnt appreciate being called a pillock by the front of house girl, even as a joke).
Even overlooking teething troubles, a few things let the place down badly. My partner was given a dirty, lipstick covered glass for our wine which wasnt exactly the best start. Then we were told that only 1 of 3 steaks on the menu was available - a steakhouse with no steak??? Come on!
My rack of ribs arrived a good 5 mins before my partner’s ribeye, and both were VERY plainly served on cast iron platters which in any other restaurant would have been hot and sizzling. A tiny bowl of chips each made up the meal, and no way was it worth £40. The ribs were really really good, but the steak wasnt a great cut plus it was very fatty even for ribeye.
Maybe our experience isnt typical, but we wont be rushing back. I could have had as good a meal at home using products from Primacy Meats at a fraction of the cost - if I want a full-on steak meal I will stick to Tony Roma’s.
What a place!! I had Springbok (like Steak only tastier!) & my wife had ostrich (tasty stuff too). All cooked in the middle of the restaurant in a kind of BBQ style….only much fancier.
There was European food on the menu too but we went with the whole African theme. I had a nice Ethiopian coffee to top it all off. + the pricing was good.
The place is worth a visit for the décor alone; There’s an African theme throughout: An acacia tree in the middle of the restaurant; Elephants and the big game animals decorate the walls. The toilets are funny & amazing! You’ve got to see them.
